September always feels different around here.

The summer shoes disappear, backpacks come out, calendars fill up, and suddenly everyone seems to be rushing somewhere. From my spot at SilverBirch, I’ve learned that back-to-school season isn’t just a fresh start for kids it can be one for the whole family.

While parents organize lunches, hockey schedules, and school forms, the team at SilverBirch often sees another kind of checklist.

Are important documents up to date? Have beneficiaries and contact information been reviewed? Are education savings plans organized? Do young adults heading off to college or university understand their banking, budgeting and financial responsibilities? And, most importantly, does everyone in the family know who to call when they have a question?

These may seem like little things, but little things have a way of becoming important things.

Through SilverBirch’s Next Generation Program, the children and grandchildren of our clients have a place to start those conversations, ask questions and begin learning about their own financial lives.

I have watched many of them grow from grade school to university and into careers of their own.

Maybe that’s why September feels special around here.

New backpacks. New beginnings. And another generation finding its way.
